Yards Brewing Company
Philly’s own, Yard’s Brewing Company, began with two college wrestlers who enjoyed quality beer but lacked the money to buy it. They realized they could satisfy their desire by brewing it themselves. Tom Kehoe and Jon Bovit began experimenting through college and initially only shared their creations with friends and family. However, having grown in popularity, the two decided to start Yards Brewing Company in a garage size brewery in Manayunk. Since their roots in college, the company has grown substantially and is now an icon in Philadelphia, with an extensive line of beers, one even being rated best pale ale in the country by the New York Times.
Not only do the Yards Guys make great beer, they also do it in an ethical manner. Yards Brewing Company is Pennsylvania’s first 100% wind powered brewery, and their tasting room is constructed entirely from salvaged materials, including a bar top constructed from bowling alley lands. Installing wind turbines is an expensive investment, but it will undoubtedly pay for itself with the amount saved on energy expenses. The brewery holds tasting tours every Monday-Saturday from 12-7pm and from 12-4pm on Sundays, so if you’re in the area and want a nice beer and glimpse of how the brewery is run, you should stop by.
