Technology Assurance Consultant Internship

This summer I had the opportunity to intern at Deloitte Philadelphia office as a Technology Risk Assurance Intern.

1.About Deloitte:

Deloitte is a professional service firm with 4 different main lines of services: audit, tax, advisory and consulting. The firm is headquartered in New York, US, but the company has over 100 offices all across the world. Considered one of the “Big 4” accounting firms, along with PwC, EY and KPMG, in 2019, Deloitte is ranked as one of the best companies to work for by Fortune magazine

My internship falls within the Advisory service line – Assurance and Internal Audit

2. The internship:

As a Technology Risk Assurance intern, my responsibility includes supporting the company audit professionals by providing General IT Testing Control (GITC) for our audit clients. Technology Risk Assurance professional will provide GITC services for the company “financial significant” applications. This process is carried out to make sure that the company financial statement is complete and accurate. In order to achieve these objectives, I will need to attend walkthrough to understand the client’s IT environment, examine the client’s IT systems, applications and controls measure such as User Provisioning, Authentication, Data Center and Network, choose a sample and perform testing on Financial significant applications and document findings in work paper.

Overall the course of my internship, I have prepared documentation and work papers such as Document Request Lists (DRLs), planning memo and IT environment overview documentations for three F500 clients in the telecommunications and technology industry. In addition, I have also performed testing on 15+ business applications including not limited to Active Directory, Linux and Windows.

One of the biggest challenges I find in this internship is that I have to work with team members across the United States and India using Skype and emails. In addition, I have to communicate with clients in different locations to gather information for testing (7 am a conference call with people in Israel or 9 pm call with the client’s team in Asia)

3. What’s special about this internship :

The People: I got assigned a coach (a senior/manager who help me with overall career development) and Onboarding Advisors (someone who answer my questions about more on-hand kinds of stuff). This allows me a better transition into the professional environment. In addition, my team: they are always available to answer my questions and provide feedback.

Travel: I got the opportunity to attend client’s walkthrough and training in Boston, New York, Connecticut, Long Island, and Dallas.

Deloitte University: All Advisory interns in the U.S come to one place in order to network and get training. Get the opportunity to network with connecting with people all over the U.S

4. How does Fox prepare me:

In term of technical skill, I gain IT knowledge from MIS 3406: Enterprise IT Architecture, Data Analytics knowledge (MySQL, database, ETL) from MIS 2401: Data Analytics. In addition, I gain soft skills by going to the career center as well as SPO meetings.

5. Key Takeaway:

Below is the three takeaway I learn from my internship at Deloitte:

  • Network: The internship is the perfect opportunity for you to meet people at Deloitte and fellow interns. Make use of it
  • Ask questions: There is no better time and place to ask your question and get them answered.
  • Have fun!!!!!!
