Hi, my name is Ben Kates.
I am a senior at Temple University’s Fox School of Business. I am a Management Information Systems major and Digital Marketing minor. I find that technology and marketing are converging; my major/minor choices are reflective of these current tech trends. I see myself utilizing new technologies to support physical and digital marketing efforts in the future.
I am actively involved in Temple University’s chapter of the American Marketing Association, exploring all aspects of marketing. I am honored to have been chosen to serve as the President for the 2015-2016 school year following my Media Relations Director role the previous year. In this role, I will oversee 10 Executive Board members and over 200 student members. One of the main initiatives of our organization this year includes developing and expanding our consulting group. Applying marketing and business skills in a real client project is important to the professional development of our student members.
I work in the Center for Student Professional Development (CSPD) at the Fox School of Business, creating and managing content for social media. I enjoy helping students with their professional development, as I have realized the importance of it through my 4 years at Fox.
This summer, I had the opportunity to intern with the eCommerce business at Burlington Stores (formerly Burlington Coat Factory). Working on the Web Analytics team was an incredible experience. Analyzing customer data and communicating insights from Google Analytics to the category managers and planners helped me identify that digital analytics is an area of business I see myself working in full-time. I took it upon myself to automate daily reporting by learning Visual Basic and writing an Excel macro. I appreciated the team’s recognition of the value I bring with my background in technology.
My interests also go beyond academics. I am an avid longboarder and during my first semester at Temple I co-founded the Temple University Longboarder’s Club (TULBC). As the President, I help recruit new members, coordinate events and trips and help spread the “stoke” of longboarding. Being able to take an important hobby of mine and turn it into a fun on-campus organization is very gratifying.
My experience creating and editing videos in Final Cut Pro as well as my experience using Photoshop to create and edit graphics are skills that help me with my marketing projects, my work with TU-AMA and TULBC and my coursework.
