3D Printing Lab Assistant

While interning at the Pilchuck Glass School my main responsibility was to take in glass art created by the instructors for that session, scan the object, and then 3D print what I had scanned. The purpose of this was to give the instructor an easier way to teach how he or she created the object as a whole. With a 3D printed version he or she could break the reprinted object to show how he created certain shapes, sizes, and contortions to the object. This was also a safer way to teach because if they used glass to instruct and it was dropped the instructor would have to remake the object entirely. With the 3D printer, the instructor could simply request another print if need be.  My other responsibilities were to help students design objects in the 3D printing software and then print what they created so they could see what the design would look like in person. I also maintained the functionality of the printer by doing basic maintenance like changing the plastic used to print, ensuring that software was up to date, and providing minor fixes if the 3D printer wasn\’t functioning properly, to name a few things. I was also responsible for making sure that the projector for the scanning was properly aligned for the camera that was used to detect the light on the object being scanned . All of the scanning was done with the HP 3D Structured Light Scanner Pro S3 and Sense 3D Scanner. The printing was done with the David 3D printer and its software.

*the attached file says that I was there for the duration of only session three but I was there for most of session two, for an orientation/campus learning experience*
