Over 10% of the nation’s bridges are structurally deficient. This makes around 60,000 bridges that are not structurally sound for passing vehicles and need repair immediately, but how does the government know which ones to focus on first? The US government needs to spend roughly $300 billion dollars to fix the 60,000 decrepit bridges, and over that time, countless more bridges will become structurally deficient. On January 20, 2017, the Delaware River Bridge was placed under ‘high’ risk after engineers spotted a massive crack in the foundation of the bridge. The integrity of the bridge was considered high risk and it has since been shut down for analysis and repair. In this worst case scenario, the closure of the bridge redirected over 42,000 cars of daily traffic and cost the municipality over $40,000 in lost toll revenue per day (~$3M in total).
