Data Analyst Intern

  1. Job function (e.g., overall role, assigned tasks)
    1. I worked as a data analytics intern for the Lansdale public library where I used my data analytics skills and tableau knowledge to help the director see which budget items were being used the least, which cost the most and share any suggestions. The director also gave me the opportunity to learn ArcGIS maps software in order to create an animated heat map showing how local events changed what areas we served the most.
  2. Examples of projects (e.g., list the projects you worked on and what you accomplished)
    1. Analyze Income and Expense spreadsheets to determine the most profitable and costly library items by dollar amount and percentage of the budget, showing the results in Tableau.
    2. Create an animated heat map from ArcGIS data that showed changes in library patron locations from 2002-2018.
  3. What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this experience in the context of specific courses)
    1. The data analytics course was extremely helpful as it taught me how to clean and normalize data. I needed to do this to historical location data to create the GIS maps.
    2. My accounting courses helped me understand the libraries financial spreadsheets, so I knew what items to focus on in the tableau visuals I created.
    3. While not a class, participating in the IBIT Data Analytics competition, allowed me to be familiar enough with Tableau to create visuals for the director explaining why I was making specific recommendations.
    4. Once approved, the description is automatically displayed in a post on your e-portfolio.
