Project Manager Internship – Summer 2016
Over the summer 2016, I jumped into a Project Manager internship at Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW). Philadelphia Gas Works is a municipality that has been an organization since 1836 providing natural gas to over 500,000 customers every year. I am managing projects by gathering requirements, working and updating the project plan with Microsoft Project 2013, consolidating invoices to ensure the project stays on budget, and setting up meetings with key members of the project. In addition to that, I was able to get an inside scope of various stages of a project from inception to Go Live. I value the internship because it allows direct hands-on experience on managing the project from working on the Request for Proposal (RFP) document, attending presentation meetings of contractors we are interested in doing business with, and collaborating with team members within the department on which contractor is best fit.
I have continued my internship in the fall semester to keep learning about the stages of a project and how I can apply my skills to provide value to the company. I am going to keep working as a Project Manager co-op student in the spring semester to continue to gain knowledge as a project manager. The job is rewarding because it gives me a great sight into the different roles that people in the Information Services department have. I enjoy working with people and getting them to work together on a project which will add value to the company and eventually trickle down to employees.
