IT Support at College of Public Health

I started working at Temple University College of Public Health on August 31st, 2015 (Fall 2015 semester). My daily responsibilities include monitoring the ticketing system and responding to support requests in person. Typical requests include new PC setups, printer setups, desktop troubleshooting, and networking issues. I’ve also had the opportunity to assist with other more advanced support requests for phpMyAdmin and logon scripts. We’re currently planning a project for an internal website and I’ll be helping to develop it. I’m very excited because I’ll be learning more about PHP and SQL (I’ve been using full stack JavaScript in my own projects) while working with another programmer/student worker and our system administrator.

I’ve learned a lot about working in a large, high security enterprise environment. Because of certain research the College of Public Health is required to have a HIPAA network. Naturally, as a member of the IT department, I respond to requests for HIPAA support whether it is for a VPN, Proxy, or RSA token. I was ignorant to how HIPAA worked before but I’ve learned a lot about it from asking questions and supporting it. Knowledge of HIPAA could give me an upper hand if I wanted to work for a hospital or insurance company.
