I’ll be working with Crystal Van, Christian Hettinger, and Chanyang Choi.
We are interested in creating a social media application focused on uploading and sharing recipes. Users will be able to input preferences to get started or create a community of their own through existing contacts. Users would have the option to create a profile and post their own recipes, follow other users, favorite recipes, and search for recipe inspiration on a feed. We are also considering calendar functionality for the app and an ability to create shopping lists based on scheduled recipes.
We are still brainstorming unique ways to monetize the app as well as exploring other ideas!
Hi Grisselle – I spoke to Crystal about this and gave her some feedback, but essentially I think the interesting angle here is the social feed. You can research apps like Venmo as a model – they basically added a social feed to PayPal (who owns them). But it works. Cooking is a more communal activity where information is shared, so it makes even more sense there. But think about how groups, friending, commenting, etc. could be used to create a new service.
The big challenge is coming up with a plan for generating revenue. The ad model is shaky, so you would need to have some evidence that advertisers would be interested, or think about a subscription based model.
