Assignment 1: Analyze a Data Set Using Tableau

Here is the assignment.

Here is the worksheet as a Word document to make it easy to fill in and submit (along with your Tableau file).

And here is the data file you will need to complete the assignment [In-Class Exercise 2.1 – 2015 Car Fuel Econ.xlsx].

Assignment 1 is due October 2 before the start of class.  Email your completed answer sheet and Tableau workbook to me.  This is an individual assignment.

Extra credit: Complete by September 20

Leave your response as a comment on this post by the beginning of class on September 2. It only needs to be three or four sentences.

If you sign in using your AccessNet ID and password you won’t have to fill in the name, email and captcha fields when you leave your comment.

In your opinion, what was the most important takeaway from Maurice Whetstone’s talk on Thursday? What did you learn about the way data is used to make decisions? Relate your observation to the class material if you can.  If you did not attend class you cannot answer this question.

Guest Speaker on September 13: Maurice Whetstone, Director of Enterprise Data Management, QVC

Our guest speaker on Thursday will be Maurice Whetstone of QVC.  Please be sure to read Mr Whetstone’s bio below and come to class prepared to ask questions.  You can also look at his information on Linkedin.

Maurice Whetstone joined QVC in May of 2013.  He is currently the Director of Enterprise Data Management.  Enterprise Data Management at QVC consists of three tenets:

  • Business Intelligence
  • Enterprise Data Warehousing
  • Data Analytics

Throughout his career Maurice has led initiatives in several areas including but not limited to Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), E-commerce, E-business, Intranets, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Business Intelligence(BI), Big Data and Enterprise Data Warehousing at companies such as Lenox China, Coach Inc. and Urban Outfitters, Inc.

Maurice has worked with and/or supported tools such as Crystal Reports, Cognos, Business Objects, MicroStrategy, Tableau, SAS, & Microsoft SQL Reporting Services. He has worked with databases such as DB2/400, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Netezza and Teradata.
