Throughout the semester technical challenges that supplement classroom instruction will be assigned. These technical challenges are not graded. However, they are the best way to prepare for the exams and project related activity. As a result, students are advised to take these challenges seriously. They will be begun in class, and students are expected to complete them on their own outside of class.
Project teams are expected/encouraged/allowed to assist one another with the challenges.
On challenge due dates, teams will be randomly called upon at the start of class to share their solutions to the challenges. If a team cannot present a thoughtful attempt to solve the assigned challenge, then each team member will lose their individual participation credit for the challenge. This can also have bearing on the instructor’s perception of how well your team is functioning (i.e. see the phrase “performance of the team” in the “Project” section of the syllabus.)
With rare exception, challenges are to be uploaded to the class server and should be working there before the start of class on the date the challenge is due. If they are not found on the class server or are not functional due to careless misconfiguration (e.g. the student failed to set up the database, or skipped uploading one or more files) then the student will not receive participation credit for the challenge.
