Despite having discussed thoroughly the onset of new and seeming “innovative” websites (networking sites in particular), I thought it would be interesting to share a related trend discussed in a couple articles I had come across in a previous semester. One of the articles that aptly explains the topic was called “What is Up with Ugly Websites?”. I thought it was interesting because it highlighted a trend in which newer “innovative” websites are using a much scaled down, simpler and in some cases “ugly” website design. The websites in turn focus more on function then on the actual appearance of the website. The articles discuss the simplicity yet boring color and picture design of sites like Facebook, Craigslist, Twitter and Plenty of Fish. Yet despite such characteristics these websites have been extremely successful. Networking sites like MySpace and Xanga, according to the articles, focused too much on a glamorous appearance rather then the functionality of the site. The decreasing popularity of these sites is the ultimate proof in this conclusion.
I think that the article goes to show that the packaging of an innovation is just as important to consider as the innovation itself. What does everyone think? Does this make these sites “innovative” or are they just following trends?
Clay Christensen’s “theory of innovation” sounds very simple but it is hard to apply in practice. We will start today with getting a feel for the basic elements of the theory of innovation.
