As a student in MIS 3536 you should (a) author new posts, (b) comment on existing posts, and (c) rate all posts and comments. All of these activities are required and will be a significant part of your class participation grade. It is also a good way for you to demonstrate your insights and ideas to the rest of the world and to learn from others (remember all posts and comments are completely open – the whole world is listening!). As a general guideline, you should be posting OR commenting once each week.

Topics for posting and commenting

The posts and comments should focus on professional topics (only). Typical posts are about a paragraph while comments are generally shorter- a few sentences. The focus should be on quality and not on quantity. For example, it is better to do one post and include some analysis in it than for you to do 5 different posts that just list some new technology.

Ideas for posts and comments include:

  • Examples of innovative technologies that demonstrate a concept we discussed in class
  • Reacting to a post and disagreeing about a claim that a particular technology is innovative
  • Providing insights on how to analyze, design, and evaluate innovative technologies
  • Providing new ways of thinking about innovative technologies
  • Adding additional insights to an existing post

Posts and comments that are NOT acceptable include:

  • Agreeing (or disagreeing) without providing a reason
  • Simply listing a new technology innovation without providing an explanation
  • Posting copyrighted material (it is acceptable to paraphrase the material and link to the original source)
  • Using unprofessional or disrespectful language
  • Material that does not fit the course goal

Tips for posting and commenting

To make your posts and comments more interesting and to achieve high ratings, you should consider:

  • Including a picture that illustrates your point
  • Set up a profile and a picture avatar on the MIS community site (directions). It is much more interesting to read a comment when you can actually see the person.

How to post and comment

All MIS 3536 students are “authors” on this site. This means that you can author new posts and also edit and delete your own posts (only). Comments are also open to all MIS 3536 students.

To add a new post

  1. Log-in to the FoxMIS community site by clicking on “log-in” above (use your Temple accessnet id and password)
  2. Click on “My Blogs” above and select “Information systems innovation” (the title of this course) – then from the sub-menu – click on “New Post”
  3. Start typing your post! Consider adding a picture to illustrate your point. Text only posts are hard to read. Use paragraphs to separate your text.
  4. Use a descriptive title – this is important if you want to encourage people to read your post – think of a newspaper style headline.
  5. Make sure you select the “Student post” category (this will allow the instructor to find your posts later). Do not add new categories.
  6. Also select another category – pick one that makes sense. (don’t use the “class notes” and “class announcement” categories – those are for the instructor to use)
  7. Select or create new tags. (Categories are for the kind of post you are making – tags are for the actual content of your post. They are similar to keywords. The tags are displayed in the “tag cloud”  – the more a tag is used the larger the word appears in the tag cloud. So it is useful if you pick existing tags).
  8. Tags and categories are critical – we are using a very unstructured medium – they provide a way for others to find your content.
  9. When done, click on “Publish” on the right hand side.
