As the potential influence of social media has been made increasingly clear during recent events in Iran, Haiti and Egypt (to name a few), some are questioning the value of social media during personal emergencies, such as a car accident or fire. Personally, I applaud social networking sites like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook for creating a service that offers a means to change nations for the better. They proved to be an excellent way to raise support in Haiti and were a major catalyst of the revolts in Egypt.
I think their potential to be a good first source for help in personal emergencies, however, has yet to be seen. While it’s important to note the significance of many factors, such as the size of your network, in the event where I was faced with an emergency and needed help Facebook is the last place I would turn.
