Announcements: news you can use

In today’s class Prof. Jacobson will continue covering Flash programming and how to do nifty things with buttons and menus. This will be very helpful information for your next group project.

In Thursday’s class and next Tuesday’s class Proj. Johnson will return to the topics of website promotion and web analytics.

If you haven’t noticed already, the grades for the Database assignment have been posted to Blackboard.

Finally, from a recent TEMPLETODAY, here’s a resource you may find helpful in class assignments and when preparing for job interviews.

Temple students, faculty and staff now have access to reports from Gartner, a leading information technology research and advisory company. The Gartner site provides access to a comprehensive collection of analysis and advice for users and vendors of technology. To access the site, visit the TUportal and click the link to the “Gartner Gateway” on the left under TUapplications.

Google Calendar Integration

I’ve set up a Google Calendar with the topics, reading assignments, and project due dates for this course. So far I’ve entered just the next few weeks–I’m waiting for feedback from you all before I enter in the entire semester. :-)

Let me know if your find this useful or if you’d like to see things entered in any different way.

There are several ways you can interact with a public google calendar. You can add it into your own Google Calendar. You can view it through a WordPress widgit (see above and below), and you can just look at it as straight HTML.

So, what do you think?

Database Development Assignment

Spring 2010 – JOU 3810 & MIS 3580
Database Development Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to explore the ways that the sources and analysis of data drives information dissemination and presentation.

You will prepare a 1-2 page document that envisions a set of data. For this exercise you can imagine that you have unlimited resources—as much time and money as required to get data—as long as you clear and precise in your plan for the data set. For inspiration of data sets, you might look at existing data sources like census.gov and the Wikipedia list of online databases.

The completed assignment should include:

  • A description of the data set.
  • What kinds of questions can you answer with this data? If you were writing a news article, research report, or blog post about the data, what kinds of interesting insights could you generate?
  • How much of the data set would you choose to make public? All of it? Only parts of it? Why?
  • How would you present the information to the public? How would you provide access to the data to others. Be specific.
  • How would the data set be maintained? What happens if major errors are found? How would you handle updates to keep the data up to date and accurate?

The assignment is due at the beginning of class (hard copy) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010.
