Internship Discussion Question #1
I hope everyone is off to a good start at your internships. We have a bunch of students doing internships this summer and participating in this forum. Please feel free to respond to one another student here if you have questions or comments.
The first question is easy: Where will you be working/worked? What will you be doing/did?
Please post a comment to this post and share with everyone what some of your responsibilities will be/were. Others may have questions or may be doing the same types of things.
Please be sure that your user ID is your name and not your TU email alias. We want to know who is posting. There is an easy way to change this. Let me know if you need help.
Also if you have not started yet that is fine. Please post your comment when you start or if you know your responsibilities already feel free to share now.
Hey everyone,
This summer, along with a few other Temple students, I will be working for Lockheed Martin at their Valley Forge campus. Lockheed Martin is the number one defense contracter in the world, as well as a top aerospace company. I’m working under the Enterprise Operations section of the firm, specifically in Desktop Services, assisting programs like the service desk and managing all the companies internal computer systems and software.
I’m only two weeks into the position so far, but some projects that have been planned out for this summer are a feasibility study for tablets in the workplace (with a focus on security, our top concern). developing a mobile directory app for Lockheed salesmen / traveling employees, and an analysis of three-year sales growth based on contracts and programs.
This summer, I will be working as an IT Intern at Sunoco, Inc. More specifically, I work with the Fuels Marketing team within the Marketing and Supply Chain IT department. Over the course of the summer, I will be working on two main projects. Project one involves the transition and implementation of new trucking transportation software from TMW Systems Inc. Project two involves the transition of a reporting module from an unsupported technology into Business Objects. Over the past week, I’ve been getting associated with Sunoco’s culture and business processes.
This summer, I will be working at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. I’m working with the Business Technology Services department in the Supervision, Regulation & Credit unit. My title is Business Analyst. So far I have three main projects assigned to me that I will be working on. The first deals with the development of the department SharePoint site, the second deals with expense analysis, and the third deals with data mapping and bulk loading some information. I’ve also been designated to lead department SharePoint training sessions which begin next week.
This summer I will be interning with Ernst & Young again. However, this internship will be different then my previous one. I am a client serving intern in the Advisory practice. Specifically I will work in Information Technology Risk and Assurance (ITRA). In this role I will be working with clients that use Ernst & Young’s internal and external auditing services.
In ITRA we will test Information Technology General Controls (ITGC), provide IT risk assessments, help both review and implement enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, assist with the analysis and overall management of data, maintain strong business continuity management and ensure IT effectiveness to our clients.
Although I have not yet begun my internship I look forward to starting on June 8, 2012.
Hi all! This summer I will be working at QVC Studio Park in West Chester. I’m working in the IT Security Department within IT and specifically with the provisioning team. This summer I will be assisting the System Security Administrators and providing access for employees and outside contractors to different systems and groups. I will also be working on SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley) reports and building a knowledge management database. This past week, I have been learning all about QVC’s culture, business processes, and specifically the impact the IT Security department has on QVC.
I am currently a full-time Infrastructure Management/ Operations Intern at SAP’s data center in Newtown Square, PA. SAP is the world leader in business application software and the data center is one in the largest in the area using state of the art technology. It is a hands on experience because most oft he actual work is being done out on the data center floor. I am exposed to the full range of technologies in the IT field, including server management, networking, storage and data management, and Data Center infrastructure. Although my primary functions involve server deployments, moves, and decommissions, I am also involved in the installation and configuration processes and provide support to related infrastructure teams.
I am working at Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems (HCS) this summer. At J&J, there are three main deparments/sectors: Medical Devices and Diagnostics, Consumer, and Pharmaceutical. I am working in the MD&D sector out of Piscataway, NJ. The 1.5 hour commute (thats only one way) is horrible!
My offical title is an IT Operations intern. Having only been here 1.5 weeks, I’ve been getting acquainted to their business processes and their day to day operations. I think so far I have spent the most time attempting to understand all the acroynms (there are 192 in the dictionary in the intranet and that doesn’t cover all of them). I have started to get involved in two major projects here at JJHCS. The first project, which actually is four mini projects in one, I get to work with a Project Manager as a administrator to a website as well as do some technical back-end work. The second project I am being involved in deals with their business plan for 2013 and helping create deliverables to give to upper management. I also have to facilitate meetings between upper management and create agendas for these meetings to keep them on track.
So far, I’ve had six one-on-one training sessions with a project manager who actually is a certified PMP from the PMI. I never really understood how much the MIS department has taught me until he started explaining things to me and I could relate them to things I’ve literally learned in class just a few weeks ago. Even though my head is spinning around all the acroynms, I actually feel like I am getting up to speed with a lot of the work I will be having to do.
Hey everyone, this summer I am working at ACE Insurance in Wilmington, Delaware. I am working in the Business Solutions and Collections department helping to create an automated system to send out Cancellation notices and calculate Collection effectiveness. As of my second day I am still learning the structure of the database and receivables warehouses as well as doing some automated trial balances.
This summer I am interning with the world’s 6th largest pharmaceutical, AstraZeneca. I’ve been assigned to the Managed Markets Operations team in the US IS department. I will be working on several individual projects throughout my internship with project managers, business analysts, and various coordinators. My current project is running user acceptance tests and writing/editing test scripts for a new system training procedure. Our team is currently upgrading a software-based system to a web-based because it has higher speed as well as better general access. This system allows us to process all the contracts and claims with the government and health institutes (such as hospitals, pharmacies, retailers, wholesalers, etc). After processing the claims, we can calculate a quarterly rebate amount that is provided to the clients using AstraZeneca products.
Along with my individual projects, I will also be working with the other IS interns on re-developing and re-designing a SharePoint website for the US IS department. Our proposal will mainly base on the research and interviews done by the IS interns from last summer. Our coordinators have given us specific requirements and functions of the site, but we are free to let our creativities run wild.
Hi everyone,
I recently began my summer internship at a company named Cablenet. They are a telecommunications company and a subcontractor for Comcast Corporation. Most likely the technician that installed your cable and internet in your home or college house was a Cablenet technician. I am working in their IT department where I will be a so called, “jack of all trades”. The department wants me to get a taste of everything while I am here during the course of the summer. I will learn the bare basics of a computer as well as learn the company’s network. I will be handling daily computer issues company employees have and I will learn how to properly protect a computer with anti-virus software. We are currently in the process of setting up a new dispatch service center within the company, so this is a month project where I will be setting up new computers and making sure all programs are functioning properly.
Hello all,
I started my internship this week at Subaru of America in Cherry Hill, N.J. within the IT department. My internship lasts for a year so our manager has multiple projects for us. I will learn how to use Oracle, PHP, Unix, and other programming languages and databases to create new applications for internal and external use. I will also be working on infrastructure projects such as desktop support, database maintenance, and etc. The other IT interns and I will also be rotating with different IT managers in their specific groups to understand various applications that is used within Subaru.
It has only been a few days, however we are already learning how to program and code so that we can create applications. We will soon work on a change request system that needs to be updated with programming.
Hi everyone,
Over the summer I will be working at Lockheed Martin Corporation. I work on the Integration and Operations team within Business Enterprise Services. I started working at Lockheed back in February and am currently in the middle of three projects. First, I am forecasting our initiatives’ budget for our team for 2013 through 2015. I have also been performing baseline reviews along with several other employees from around the company. In a baseline review new programs/services within Lockheed are explained and presented to me and the rest of the review team. We are given the chance to ask questions regarding the service/program. The review team then privately convenes and writes up strengths, concerns/observations, and actions for the program/service to consider. Finally, I am preparing for an exam to be certified as a control account manager.
Hey everyone, I will be working at Interactive Commerce Group/ Lamps.com/ Payrollshopping.com as a Summer Associate Intern. I will be migrated Microsoft SQL server data to a new platform, developing queries used for company reporting, as well as gathering requirements for upcoming site upgrades. I will also be developing queries to send information on our products to Amazon to be able to place them on their site. I will have to write a query that shows all of our product’s data in their specific format and requirements as well.
Hello, I currently work at Proscape Technologies in Horsham, PA as a Technical Analyst Intern. I build interactive presentations for marketing teams all over the world. Most of these marketing teams are part of pharmaceutical companies, such as Merck in the UK, Roche in Turkey, and Sanofi-Aventis in Korea. I also work with the HTML, CSS, and PHP coding that powers the Proscape Portal, a cloud-based website which connects Proscape to its clients.
Hey Everyone,
This summer I am holding the position of Vechicle Order and Residual Analyst for Penkse Truck Leasing in Morgantown, PA. Many of you be familiar with another branch of the company, Penske Automotive, that is responsible for many Indy 500 champions and NASCAR winners. Penske Corporation has 4 main subdivisions and the one I am employed under is the Truck Leasing, which includes commercial leasing, rentals, and logistics. In total this division nearly makes up for 75% of the 4.1 billion dollar annual revenue that Penske brings in. What most don’t know(myself included before my first two week of employment) is that Penske is the main supplier to the majority of tractor trailers you see on the road on a daily basis (even the ones that aren’t painted in bright Penske yellow). Some of the major customers that come to Penske for full-service leases include just about any of your big name corportations (Wawa, Dunkin Donuts, Staples, Pepsi, Home Depot, etc.). In short, was my division will do is spec a truck to the customers specific needs, detail it with company specific decals, cordinate the build from hundreds of vendors across the country, make sure the vehicle get assembled in a timely and efficient manner and then structures a lease for the customer that includes full service and maitenence so the customer can focus on its core competencies.
So that’s what my company does. Throughouy my first two weeks I have mainly been understanding the business processes that go on along with getting aquainted with the various systems and intranet portals that the company uses. Additionally, I have been assigning dispatchers for the various manufacturer moves, calculating residual values on used vehicles at the end of their lease terms, and managing a company specific system that tracks all the logistics of the truck building process.
Hope everyone’s enjoying their jobs!
I am working at Aetna as a Client Support Service Desktop Support Technician. I will be trained in various IT support functions including, taking Help Desk Calls, resolving technical issues, installing software, upgrading computers, printer support, setting up new employees. The intern will also have the opportunity to work on major projects , including project management and execution of Windows 7 upgrades.
So far I have helped swap and install office phones, read about some of their processes, and helped upgrade some employee computers to Windows 7 from Windows Xp.
Hi Everyone,
I am wrapping up my internship with Campbell’s Soup Company next week. I participated in the SAP Solution Manager Initiative. My responsibilities were to create audit reports showing which documents in SAP were in the wrong location, incorrectly named, 95% complete and awaiting approval, etc. In order to create the reports, I researched SAP Solution Manager and began trying to re-create existing reports. I then met with a few members of Campbell’s IT team individually and they suggested new reports that would be useful. With the new requirements, I generated the rest of the reports and then began to document step-by-step how to create each audit report. I submitted this documentation to the enterprise testing lead to test and after receiving feedback, revised my documentation.

Hello class,
This summer I will be working with JPMorgan Chase out in Wilmington, DE. More specifically I will be working in their card services division in their Mobile Payments Team. JPMorgan Chase is a global financial institution that specializes in securities, investments and retail. It has the largest market capitalization when compared to all other banks in the United States.
I just started my internship yesterday but to give a basic idea for the next 10 weeks of my internship I will be working with the Mobile Payments Team with the integration and testing of their new product. I will be part of a team that uses agile methodologies to implement new systems. I will be using queries and examining existing databases and will be working with developers to integrate various systems. I will be working closely with the Manager of PMT which will further my understanding about SDLCs and agile methodologies and how it pans out in a real business setting.
Hardik,
I’m not sure where you are living, but if you are still in Philadelphia and are interested in carpooling, please let me know. I live in Center City.
Hello everyone,
This summer I have an internship with Flip Media (http://www.flipcorp.com/en) located in Dubai, UAE, and it’s very exciting to be here. While Flip predominantly develops websites for their clients, we do a variety of digital work such as mobile app development, social media consultancy, search engine optimization, and etc. Although Flip was founded in early 2000′s, it’s renowned for being the biggest, and best, interactive advertising agency in the Middle East region. Being here for more than a week now, I know why; their focus on being highly organized and specific about everything.
My official title at flip is Content Executive, while I work in the Client Servicing department. My duties have been anything from content population and quality assurance for websites, to posting on Facebook Fan Pages (mostly Farsi, because I speak it). At Flip we use our own CMS (Content Management System) which I had training on, and now I’m becoming more familiar with. I do have to keep track of my work by filling out daily Timesheets that help my employer, as well as the clients, to see the progress that’s gone through a job.
I’m learning more and more every day, and I’m excited to talk more about it during my time at Flip Media.

Michael,
My father has worked there for about 25 years. He works in Quality Assurance, I believe. I’m sure he knows a lot of people and how a lot of different things work on the base. I used to live literally about a quarter mile from the East Gate of the base since I was about four years old. If you would like, I might be able to set something up if you wanted to grab lunch with my dad sometime as a networking opportunity. Also, if you need to know anything about Mechanicsburg, feel free to ask me. My email is patrick.destefano@temple.edu
Patrick,
That is pretty awesome to hear that your dad has been here for 25 years! I would definitely be interested in meeting with him. A lot of people have been here for 20+ years and the culture here is really great, so I can see why people choose to stay. I will shoot you an email!

Hey everyone,
I am interning at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the Assurance line of service. Within Assurance I am in the Process Assurance area. I am working in center city at the office located on 20th and Market, but will be moving to client locations for the majority of the internship.
My responsibilities mirror that of a first year associate, including traveling to client sites and using the same applications used to do audit work. I will be working in teams at client engagements helping test ITGC’s (Information Technology General Controls). One example is testing to make sure that users that are terminated actually lose their privileges to access databases. I have recently gone through training to learn how to correctly document controls within the “Aura” application. I have also been assigned coaches to aid me with questions I have, all of whom have been extremely helpful. I look forward to the three client engagements I am scheduled to be on.
