Facial-recognition software, Rekognition, was created by Amazon and was sold specifically to law enforcement to help with crime-fighting. This software did not pass the basic tests. The tests that were used, were there to test the accuracy of identifying a person’s face. One of the tests failed included identifying a person’s gender properly of people with a darker complexion. This created negative reactions because many believed due to results based on a bias could ruin the name of the artificial intelligence industry. Not only would this affect the artificial intelligence industry, but also hurt a citizen’s right to have free expression, as well as put a larger burden on communities of color. Amazon tried to deflect these accusations and stated that the use of facial analysis and gender are the fundamentals in speeding up a facial-recognition search. Since Amazon refused to acknowledge these issues, companies such as Microsoft and IBM are working on software’s that can pass these tests and not affect people based on a bias.
Personally, I think that Amazon should stop trying to move forward with Rekognition, as well as other companies. I really enjoy my privacy and seeing that companies are watching me without my permission is a little uncomfortable. However, my main concern is using the facial recognition during a police chase and accidentally flagging the wrong person as someone who is a criminal.
Do you think that Amazon should continue developing Rekognition?
If developed should we be concerned about it?
