I thought this was a good read, especially for the cyber track. It has some really good themes within it. The author outlines 4 suggestions for rising through the ranks in the cyber security field.
Progressive Certifications – The key word here is progressive. While a lot of foundational certs are standard to get your foot in the door, a more advanced certificate will be the key to moving into a more advanced role, especially if you’re doing so externally from your initial employer. When you think of the risk of having a bad cyber security employee, it makes sense that some certificate be required to demonstrate their knowledge beyond interview questions.
Strategic Communication Skills – Simply put, you need to be able to communicate cyber security concepts and incidents to the C suite of executives in the board room as well as be very technical with the analysts and investigators on the ground level doing the work.
Government Clearance- The public sector has large gaps to fill in cyber security. Having a clearance can get you hired a lot quicker and will set your application apart from others.
Digital Forensics- I’d actually change this one to say incident investigation. There’s a growing need for really good people who can investigate an incident and do the forensics work required to extract data and do it in a way admissible in a court of law.
