This week’s topic is regarding Google Chrome’s “Font Wasn’t Found” malware scam. Google Chrome users beware of a website with messy content prompting you to download a missing front to read the site by updating your Chrome font pack; coined as “The ‘HoeflerText’ font wasn’t found” scam. This trap has been targeting Google Chrome users by posing as a fake Google Chrome font pack update in which tricks users into installing malware on their devices.
Apparently, Chrome doesn’t flag these files as malware, yet the browser does block it because the file isn’t downloaded too often, which is a standard warning. I find that very strange. However, “NeoSmart Technologies has since run the malware through Virus Total, which revealed that currently only 9 out of 59 anti-virus software in the database accurately identify the file as malware.”
Users need to exercise caution when downloading and to keep your antivirus software up-to-date and not fall for scam asking you to update the Chrome font pack, as it already comes with everything you need.
