Since enrolling in this program, I have been on the lookout for advice from information security professionals and IT auditors on how to get started and succeed in this field. While I found many pieces of advice, one of the articles that I found to be most useful was this blogpost by Daniel Miessler.
The blogpost demonstrates and provides a guideline on how to build a successful infosec career. This includes everything from developing a homelab, certifications, networking, and being passionate. Over the last year, I have been following the advice in this particular blogpost which include:
- Building a homelab and completing the tasks Daniel listed. Most were done as part of the Enterprise Architecture class for IT auditors.
- Signed up for Twitter and use it as my cyber news feed. Also use Feedly for news but not as often.
- Started to learn to code. Albeit it is only Python but I am slowly exposing myself to it. Likewise learned very basics of C# in Enterprise Architecture class.
- Working toward getting my CISA certification. Will likely, pursue getting Security+ then CISSP in the future.
While I feel I have accomplished quite a bit over this past year in the program, there are still many things to be done as well as experiences to be had. With that being said, I just wanted to share this InfoSec professionals website so that others might be able to informed and inspired as I have been. On his website, there are hundreds of blog posts ranging from technical guides to theory, but some are super beneficial as a student (see InfoSec Interview Questions). I encourage you all to either use Daniel Miessler as a resource or find other resources to help you plan your career in the field. If you have come across other professional blogs that you have found useful, please share!
