Coursework

I have taken a variety of courses throughout my time at Temple. I have been able to learn about various different areas of business, gain more advanced technology skills, understand the importance of teamwork, and enhance my presentation skills.

I have taken and am enrolled in several MIS classes including:

  • Honors Information Systems in Organizations (MIS 2901)

MIS 2901 introduces students to the role of information technology in businesses. It shows students the opportunities that businesses receive from utilizing technology effectively. Students are introduced to several important MIS techniques including swim lane diagrams and ERDS, and learn how to use tools such as SalesForce and Google Analytics. This course is important for students in the major because it provides a compelling introduction to technology in the workplace and discusses the various roles and career paths available to MIS professionals.

  • Data Analytics (MIS 2502)

Data Analytics teaches students how to work with and analyze data in a business context using MySQL and R. Learning how to use these tools and look at data from an analytical standpoint is the main focus of this class. MIS 2502 is valuable for students because it allows us to gain a better understanding of how to analyze data for a business, interpret the findings, and present the information effectively.

  • Data Centric Application Development (MIS 3501)

MIS 3501 is one of the required courses in the curriculum that focuses on programming. Using HTML, CSS, and PHP, students develop web-based data-centric applications. For many students, this might be their first introduction to programming, so being able to learn some of the basics in coding enables us to stay competitive when applying for jobs.

  • Enterprise IT Architecture (MIS 2501)

In MIS 2501, students go more in depth into the framework and architecture of information technology in organizations. Explaining the functions of different aspects of IT and assessing issues that may occur, this course forces students to understand and evaluate technologies. Through a combination of tech challenges and flash research papers, students get hands on experience with the technology while building the skill of being able to identify the business case for its implementation. Students learn the crucial skill of clearly and concisely communicating ideas in the most effective way for the audience.

  • Digital Solutions Studio (MIS 3506)

Digital Solutions Studio is a project-based course where students are assigned to a team for the entire semester, where they take on the roles of business analysts for a project. Working with a real client, students gather an understanding of requirements and ultimately create a prototype to present to the sponsors. This course enables students to better understand the role of a BA in an organization and enhances one’s team-work, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Application Integration & Evaluation (MIS 3502)
  • Lead Global Digital Projects (MIS 3535)
  • Information Systems Integration (MIS 4596)
