Coursework

Below are descriptions of some of the most impactful courses I have taken during my time in the Management Information Systems program. Each course has allowed me to develop as both a technology and business professional.

MIS 0855 – Data Science:

Data Science was an MIS elective that I opted to take. This class strengthened my Excel skills and introduced me to Tableau. Throughout the course we would find large data sets and manipulate those in Excel to uncover meaningful information. We would then use that knowledge to create visually compelling conclusions. Understanding and extracting useful insights is only half the battle with large data. The most important step in any delivery, the follow through must provide a well-constructed presentation of those insights. Tableau has allowed me to expand upon pivot charts in Excel, and deliver more intriguing graphical representations. Check out my submission for the QVC Data Analytics Challenge here.

MIS 2501 – Enterprise IT Architecture:

Enterprise IT Architecture develops an understanding of modern infrastructure practices and how to weigh those benefits against the business’ needs. The class introduces students to the design and development of a virtual network environment using the Microsoft Azure service. Throughout the class, we gain invaluable information technology skills as well as learn how to leverage our business knowledge to pitch these infrastructure modernizations to stakeholders. With flash research papers, students were able to gain hands-on experience with researching a technical solution and writing an accessible, easily understood memo. This class felt very well-rounded and was very relevant for my position at PCS.

MIS 2502 – Data Analytics:

Data Analytics added onto some of the ideas that were presented in Data Science. This class is designed to introduce students to working with business databases, as well as handling business data. The focus is on efficient investigation and discovery of overwhelmingly large data sets. Students use MySQL and R to solve business problems analytically. Data Analytics is extremely important because the ability to analyze, understand, and present data is becoming increasingly important to growing companies.

MIS 3501 – Data-Centric Application Development:

Data-Centric Application Development introduces the foundations for web application development. Students are emerged in a number of web languages and build dynamic web pages. The class builds on four web languages: HTML, CSS, PHP, and PDO. This class was very fast-paced and moved at the speed of a bootcamp. Coming out of the class, I felt well equipped to maintain and develop useful web applications.

MIS 3506 – Digital Design and Innovation:

Digital Design and Innovation teaches students about the roles and responsibilities of being a business analyst. Students are assigned a semester-long project in which they must create a prototype to present to their project sponsor. Students are paired with students in the Lead Global Digital Projects class, who have the role of project managers. The course develops student’s technical, communicative, and organizational skills. This was a very refreshing and rewarding course that allowed me to develop a real-world project. Check out my prototype for PoundCake here!
