SWOT Analysis
Nintendo Wii
Strengths: first to market, low upfront costs, company has past success with family gaming model, extensive experience with motion technology – could lead to better and faster improvements
Weaknesses: console power, smaller game selection
Opportunities: the first to introduce motion technology in video games – gives it experience to expand the technology, low production costs enable Nintendo to explore future technologies
Threats: Sony and Microsoft have released their own motion technology gaming systems to solid reviews – PS Move and MS Kinect
Microsoft Kinect
Strengths: unique experience – no controller, software development
Weaknesses: limited experience in with the technology, eliminates the controller – sometimes a controller is necessary
Opportunities: the Kinect has become wildly popular – Microsoft has incentive to further develop motion technology
Threats: Sony PlayStation Move and Nintendo Wii
Sony PlayStation Move
Strengths: superior hardware development – more accurate than the Wii, large game selection, lower price than the Kinect (Wii excluded because it is a standalone system)
Weaknesses: high upfront production costs
Opportunities: expand on the Wii’s success by implementing the Move system with more “hardcore” games to appeal to its core customer group
Threats: Microsoft Kinect and Nintendo Wii – both systems are having more success
