Data Science:

While I was taking Data Science, I learned how to make professional Data Visualizations using programs like Tableau. Overall, I learned the importance of Data Science and the impact it has on the corporate world.

What I found most interesting, and what I believe will be most relevant in my career, about Data Science is the level of understanding that comes with data visualization. Although numbers and statistics provide the same amount of information, visualization allows us to achieve a higher level of understanding and interpretation. Additionally, I learned in Data Science the difference between good and bad data. We identified errors and intentionally misleading data that would be used to exaggerate the information. These are the conceptual skills that will be used as the basis throughout my career and could even be applied to my personal life.

IT Governance:

This was the first class in my auditing education. I learned how to identify risks in policies and how to mitigate risks when managing information systems.

The main project of the class was to audit a company’s policy. We were divided into groups and worked on the audit as a team. My team decided to audit Google’s Privacy Policy. During our audit, we found that Google is very vague about what they use our search history and data for. Granted, Google is still a very solid and risk-averse company when it comes to protecting users.

My main takeaway from this class was the ability to think like an auditor. Before, I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the sites I was surfing and how they use my data. Going forward, I am going to be a much more cautious user.

Data Analytics:

I learned how to extract and input data into databases using MYSQL. Furthermore, I learned how to operate R and RStudio in order to cluster, associate, and predict data.

Data Analytics taught me the first steps, in practice, that will allow me to be in control of the data. The skills used in this class can be applied every day in my future career. MYSQL and R can be used daily for any operation that requires data. Additionally, R Studio can be even be used for basic levels of visualization. These programs are the basis for Data Visualization and interpretation that will be used daily in my career.
