Internship Experience

Universal Health Services Internship

I am currently interning at Universal Health Services for the summer of 2018. UHS is a fortune 500 medical management company based in King of Prussia, PA. As of today, they have 24 inpatient acute care hospitals and 230 behavioral health care facilities located in 37 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and the United Kingdom. UHS provides quality healthcare by building and acquiring high quality hospitals in growing markets.

I am interning with the Information Services sector on the acute side specifically with the laboratory team.  The role of the IS team is to support the hospitals and facilities in the maintenance and build of Cerner Millennium. UHS uses Cerner’s services and applications to deliver their health information technology solutions. My specific role on the PathNet team is as an application analyst. My position includes supporting the clinical and anatomical pathology departments including blood bank, general laboratory, and microbiology.

The majority of the people on my team have a clinical background, and I do not. This made the internship challenging, but I learned a lot. I never correlated health care with IT, but IT is very important in this field. During my experience here, my team members treated me like I was already part of the team. This included attending all meetings and calls, completing projects, and working on tickets. They kept my very busy which helped me learn something new every day.

I met a lot of very knowledgeable people and the intern program did a good job of keeping us connected with the other interns even though we were scattered through out the various teams. We attended lunch and learns every week where we were able to hear from directors and managers about their experience here at UHS and how they got to where they were today. We also met with full time staff that started out as interns and how they succeeded in their own internships. Meetings like this not only were informative, but gave the interns a chance to network with one another and find out more about the company.
