Internship at Subaru of America

downloadI began working as an intern on the infrastructure team of the IT department at Subaru of America in May, 2014. I have learned a great deal during my time with SOA, including several web development languages (including HTML, CSS, PHP, and some jQuery), proper project documentation, and many business analysis skills. Although I am approaching the end of my 12-month internship, I have enjoyed and benefited from my experience at Subaru.

Some of my greatest accomplishments at Subaru have been related to building informational portals that allow users to check on data stored in various databases. I reference this data through SQL queries embedded in PHP code then focus on the design of the site once the functions are complete. I created one portal to check on the status of several servers such that a DBA would not have to manually change the status in HTML. The second web portal I designed was much more involved and showed all of the contractors working in the IT department. Not only does it show each contractors specific contract document, the manager above them, and the company for which they work, but it allows users to insert and change any of that data from the website.

As it’s my first and only internship, I am incredibly fortunate to have chosen a year long internship at SOA. Not only was I able to actually give something back to the company once I learned something, but I have learned many different skills around several functions of the department. I look forward to any opportunities I might have with the company, but if none present themselves, I am very happy to have made the connections I did.
