Information Systems in the Military

The classes that I’ve taken thus far as an MIS major have really helped me understand the importance of information systems. More specifically, I was able to realize the significance of systems thinking, and how all processes within a defined system are interrelated. This has prepared me for my career in the military, as I will be working as a Combat Systems Officer (CSO). My duties as a CSO will include navigating aircrafts from point A to B, managing electronic warfare equipment, and deploying weapon systems.

At a high level, my job as a CSO relates to my studies because the missions that I perform have a purpose, a beginning and an end, many components that are crucial to the mission, and an unpredictable environment. Each mission will serve its own purpose; however, the missions that I perform will supplement the Air Force’s overarching mission. The components that are involved include: pilots, CSO’s, aircraft maintenance personnel, air traffic control, boom operators, etc. Without one of these components, my job as a CSO would be close to impossible to perform.

Due to my coursework, I am able to understand just how important systems thinking is. I’ll be able to perform my missions and appreciate the men and women under my command. Without them, there would be no mission.
