Virtualization and Cloud Computing

In the coming year of server refresh, our company can implement a server virtualization project that would save us $9.2 million over three years. Server virtualization consolidates servers through simultaneously running multiple virtual servers on one physical machine. The use of virtual machines will drastically decrease the amount of physical servers needed, allowing for a reduction in the cost of purchasing and maintaining numerous physical servers.

The key benefit of server virtualization is the ability to consolidate all of our servers, allowing for one physical server to simultaneously operate multiple virtual servers. Virtualization makes the infrastructure simpler and more efficient by taking advantage of the single physical server’s processing power and running at maximum capacity. Virtual Servers allows for easy duplication, which makes it easy to add more servers to a growing data center. Server virtualization has the same benefit of utilizing numerous physical servers but on significantly less servers. Virtualization can reduce the use of physical servers by about 80%.

The three-year total cost of converting our data center into 200 traditional and 800 virtual servers would only be $4.8 million. If we were only to replace our current data center’s 1000 traditional servers, the expected three-year cost would be $14 million. By simply implementing virtualization in our data center, we will have decreased costs in energy, cooling, and maintenance saving our company a three-year net benefit of $9.2 million.
