Data & Analytics

This course’s main purpose is to equip students with data analytics such as creating data models for businesses based on business rules; creating transactional database from a model using SQL/noSQL (MySQL & MongoDB); creating an analytical data store by extracting relevant data from a transactional database; perform extract-transform-load (ETL) functions such as data sourcing, pre-processing, and cleansing; exporing hidden trends in analytical data stores using data mining techniques of clustering, segmentation, association, and decision trees (R/RStudio). Data analytics is one of  my interests and this course familiarized me with the foundational knowledge of working with database and different types of data. R/Rstudio provided with technical skills to visualize data trends and patterns. SQL also is useful when it comes to retrieving data from a database from a server to integrate it with web APIs. These components are essential for data analysts.

User Experience Design

I previously took the User Experience Design course. This course easily became one of my favorite courses I’ve taken at Temple. In the course, I was exposed to UX Design principles and Agile methodologies that allowed me to tap into the creative and curiosity-driven side of myself that I didn’t necessarily always get from classes I’d taken. I was not aware of UX Design until I took MIS 3506 but the course exposed me to an entire career field and hobby. Ever since taking this course, I’ve been interested in pursuing a career in UX Design or user research and I don’t think I would’ve even known the career fields exist if I hadn’t taken MIS 3506.

Lead Global Digital Projects

I took Lead Global Digital Projects in the Spring of 2021. I really enjoyed this course because it allowed me to assume the position of a product manager and work with a real client for my project. The course gives you a sneak peek of what it would be like if you were to pursue a career in product management and work on a scrum team. For the semester-long project, my team and I were able to utilize agile methodologies to keep us on track as we worked to design a website for a client. This course was helpful for my professional development because it showed me what working with clients post-grad may be like and the responsibilities that come with being a product manager if it were a career path I decided to pursue.
