Lockheed Martin

Over the Summer of 2016 I had the opportunity to work for Lockheed Martin as a Data Analytics Intern at their Owego, NY facility. As an intern I was tasked with supporting the Data Analytics team, which is part of the Enterprise Business Services (EBS) area of the business. EBS serves as IT and Business support to the four (formerly five) major profit centers of the business, Aeronautics, Space Systems, Missiles and Fire Control (MFC), and Mission Systems and Training (MST). The team I spent the summer working with supported the MST area of the business using a wide variety of Business Intelligence and Analytics tools.

As a member of the Data Analytics team I was tasked with supporting several projects. The most significant project I was tasked with over the summer was crafting a Tableau Dashboard for an internal reporting service so the administrators of that system could analyze how, where, when, and by whom their solution was being utilized within the business. This project began with me creating a model that would supply the data to the Tableau Dashboard. To accomplish this I used Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) to create a tabular model. While creating this model I improved upon old skills, such as the use of SQL, and gained new skills, such as Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) querying language.  Leveraging skills I have learned in the classroom in a real world business setting was a truly invaluable experience into my development as an IT professional, and learning new skills along the way only furthered my growth.

Though I have had internships in the past my internship with Lockheed Martin provided me with my first real opportunity to work with a team in a business setting. Throughout the entirety of my internship the more senior members of the Data Analytics team, my fellow interns, and members of other closely related teams were there to assist me in anyway they could. Having professionals with experience, and people my age with different backgrounds being so caring and helpful was invaluable in reaching my goals, both for projects I was working on, and in my development as a professional.

My day-to-day roles and responsibilities entailed:

  • Working with Tableau everyday to learn all the ins and outs of the tool to help drive further development and investment by the company into the software.
  • Assisting, and leading team projects aiming to help the business better understand itself through analytics
  • Collaborating with a team of diverse skill sets and experience, to further MST’s analytical capabilities.
  • Working with different Analytics and Business Intelligence tools to determine their value to the company.
