Church & Dwight

chdDuring the summer of 2014, I worked as a full-time IT intern for Church & Dwight. Church & Dwight is an international consumer goods company who manufactures and sells household products and medical devices. Some C&D brands include Arm & Hammer, Oxi Clean, OrajelTrojan, Vitafusion, Spinbrush, First Response and Nair.

In the IT department, I worked with HP Unified Functional Testing (formally known as Quick Test Professional). As this was software that the company never used before, it was my job to learn and demonstrate its value by automating system and user acceptance tests for SAP and other web applications. While working with UFT, I also learned how to generate customized test reports in HP Quality Center, the company’s current testing system. The reports I made included information pertaining to test executions, user requirements, and traceability; features that were previously underutilized in Quality Center and done manually.

The other focus of my internship was working toward a master computer systems validation plan. For this, I collected and analyzed data on the different kinds of hardware and software used in the company’s plants. The data had to do with things like the vendor and model of the device, the level of programming and configuration of the device and if the device was considered a GxP (good lab/manufacturing practice) device that could be FDA regulated. I also compiled validation deliverables from past projects such as validation required checklists, 21 CFR Part 11 (FDA regulation regarding e-signatures) checklists, validation risk reports and validation summary reports.

This internship was eye opening experience of the IT workplace and the ways MIS can impact a manufacturing company. Seeing a formal quality testing process and learning about validation and regulatory requirements are subjects that are not touched on very much in my MIS coursework. Getting exposure to these areas and the company as a whole was a great way to expand my MIS knowledge and gain experience that I can take with me as I move forward with my MIS career.
