Data Analyst Intern

During my 2023 summer, I served as a full-time paid Data Analytics intern at ClinicMax Inc., a small software solutions company located in Germantown, MD specializing in custom Electronic Health Records (EHR). The firm’s clientele includes doctor’s offices, hospitals, and other healthcare franchises across the state of Maryland. My role consisted of performing several data analysis tasks using SQL and Excel tools to provide insights into various business needs. For example, I used Microsoft SQL Server to generate queries and reports regarding population health data for hospital admission rates across the state of Maryland. I also used similar tools to provide insights on the usage of various EHR software elements from hospitals versus local doctor’s offices, examining how different firms uniquely utilize the software. I created several Excel reports and presentations to communicate this information and my findings with the team. I was also tasked with aiding the implementation of a new software element in the EHR platform: an SMS messaging tool that allows doctors and healthcare providers to communicate directly with patients regarding appointment reminders, cancellations, etc. Working directly with the software engineering team, I helped to iterate and test this feature as it became slowly integrated into the system. During this experience, I continued learning and improving my technical skills including SQL and Excel data manipulation, using tools such as Microsoft SQL Server and PowerBI. I also learned more about the software development process including AGILE methodologies and the importance of software iteration/testing. This role relates to my major as I am continuing to build upon the skills I’ve learned through this internship. For example, in MIS 2502: Data and Analytics, I was able to build off the foundation of SQL knowledge that I gained from this internship during the SQL portion of the course. In addition, I was able to apply the data analysis techniques I’ve learned from my internship to the assignments and concepts learned in class, including manipulating CSV files and making business decisions based on raw data. For MIS 2402: Web Application Development, working with the software engineering team from my internship helped me pick up the thinking framework of computer programming, which made the course significantly easier when creating JavaScript programs and projects. The skills I’ve gained throughout my internship have directly applied to my MIS coursework thus far, and I hope to continue building off this knowledge through future coursework and internships.
