Data Operations

The Community Grocer is a nonprofit organization redefining the corner store experience by enabling these stores to sell fresh fruits and vegetables, which can also be purchased using food stamps. This initiative marks the first time such a model is being implemented and is designed to address food insecurity and food deserts in West Philadelphia. By providing access to fresh and healthy food options, The Community Grocer aims to support the community in overcoming challenges related to food scarcity and improve overall nutritional access.

Internship Term: June 3rd- August 14th 2024

Hours: Monday -Friday (full time)

As a Data Operations specialist at The Community Grocer (TCG), my primary focus was on selecting and implementing the software needed for our store. This included sourcing a POS system integrated with live inventory tracking to ensure seamless operations and efficient stock management. Additionally, I worked extensively with Excel to create a comprehensive manual for the staff, which will be used once the building opens. This manual is designed to guide the team in recording backend inventory management processes and to automate the par levels and fulfillment tasks, ensuring smooth and clear inventory control.

We also partnered with Penn Medicine to conduct research in the Cobbs Creek community of West Philadelphia, focusing on how diet affects overall health. The study examines the correlation between poor nutrition and high rates of hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes in low-income neighborhoods. Through this research, we aim to better understand the impact of diet on health outcomes and develop strategies to improve access to healthier food options in these communities.
