Interests & Hobbies

Balancing school work with part-time work for two jobs proves to be a time consuming task. If I am not at work, I usually find myself study, completing course work, or attending classes. Although I do not always get the chance to have free time, when the opportunity presents itself, I usually find myself surfing, longboarding, or fishing.

Surfing is one of my greatest passions. Whenever there is a swell coming up the east coast, I do everything I can to go surfing in New Jersey. However, it has always been somewhat difficult for me to go surfing because I grew up in Pennsylvania, on the border of New Jersey. It takes me about an hour to an hour and a half to drive from my parents’ house to my favorite surf spots in New Jersey. This inconvenience has seldom stopped me from going when there are waves. The frigid temperatures in the Northeast during winter will not even stop me from surfing; besides, New Jersey’s best waves and smallest crowds are in these winter months.

One of many longboards I manufactured

Whenever I have free time and I am either not able to make it to the beach or there are no waves, I enjoy longboarding. Longboarding closely resembles the feeling of surfing on pavement. In high school, I actually began a small company I called Turner Custom Longboards, where I manufactured, marketed, and distributed longboards to customers. I completed a total of ten longboards and sold a four of these boards to customers. Not only did I enjoy the carpentry aspect involved with creating these boards, I also loved the business aspect; everything from calculating my budgets and figure out the correct prices at which I should sell the boards, to marketing the boards and my company using social media sites such as Facebook.

Another hobby I enjoy is fishing. I took an interest in the sport after my dad first took me to go fishing at a very young age. Every year in April my family travels to our cabin in The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania for the opening day of trout season on Pine Creek. This has become a tradition in our family that I look forward to every year. Although school and work makes it difficult to find time for fishing, my dad and I still try to schedule weekend fishing trips.
