Family Assistance for Professional Technical Writing

For the late Spring/early Summer semester, I have been assisting my sister to improve her professional technical writing skills. She has a goal of earning an opportunity to get an internship in digital marketing to improve her professional work experience. During our time together, I evaluated her work to judge what writing techniques she could improve on, mainly focusing on the audience in which she is writing for. This skill she and I were working on required a large amount of research on the individuals she would be writing to/for, as it’s important to understand how you should write something to provide more meaning to your words, rather than using the same point of view no matter who the audience is. The other main topic we focused on was how she structured her work so that the most important topics should be mentioned first, helping the readers to better understand what mindset they should have when reading her work, where she would then explain these topics later, after a more defined outline is laid out in her writing.  As part of this training, I also guided her towards Handshake’s website to begin searching for professional development, and technical writing events so that she can speak to people who have extensive experience in her desired work field, so she can gain insights from those who know exactly what she will need in the future. After out time together, she began working on improving her skills in a new way, which she, so far, believes to have decreased her learning curve.
