AstraZeneca Internship: May – Aug 2016
Position: Global Commercial IT Intern at AstraZeneca (pharmaceutical company)
Roles: Business Analyst, Test Script Writer, Data Integrator
For one full-time summer internship I worked on the Global Commerical IT team within AstraZeneca, a large multinational biopharmaceutical company based in the UK. Most of my work consisted of business analyst activities for one of the largest projects within my department – they were implementing a new software to support the sales and marketing functions. Mainly I did requirements gathering and clarification to make sure the software was configured correctly to meet the global standard and market specific business needs. Another, though smaller, aspect of my internship was supporting the existing CRM software by creating test scripts and executing UAT testing during the release management process. I also used software to integrate data streams together for reporting purposes.
The MIS program here gave me the fundamentals to help me understand my work, but my internship really helped build on that foundation by cementing class concepts with real life examples, some of which were very different than what was taught in the classroom. One of the biggest was my company using the user stories and epics instead of use cases like in class. After my internship I’ve gained a real understanding of what creating test scripts and executing those entails, understanding what change management and requirements gathering includes, as well as just a generally better understanding of how larger businesses function.
Specific Achievements:
• Communicated with 25+ market representatives to gather and clarify software configuration requirements for the implementation of a new global platform supporting the sales content review and approval process of the 8th largest bio-pharmaceuticals company in the world
• Scripted and produced a 2-minute animated video with globally understood wording and visuals to kickoff the new software project and announce the replacement of the different regional software, sent to over 5,000 users worldwide
• Wrote and executed Salesforce user acceptance test scripts with developer input for quality assurance
• Led the 4 person intern group project to create a business case for Trello, an online collaboration and task management tool, which our team presented to over 40 department employees
Information Technology Assistant: Aug – Dec 2014
Position: Information Technology Assistant for MIS 2101 – Information Systems in Organizations
Roles: Teacher’s Assistant, IT Help Desk Support
Because of my high grades in MIS the faculty asked me to become a teacher’s assistant for the introductory MIS course, as well as support the help desk for the SAP project students often had difficulty with. For the help desk, it was usually me and another assistant in a computer room with 40 seats that students could work at and readily ask us for help understanding the project instructions, answering any questions, or helping to troubleshoot their actions with the software.
• Supported 60 students’ completion of introductory MIS course through correcting and providing feedback on student projects and exams
• Troubleshooted and resolved any issues students from all classes encountered with SAP software
