Developing Cross-Cultural Intelligence
I completed a LinkedIn Learning course on developing cross-cultural intelligence led by Tatiana Kolovou.
The first section emphasized the importance of recognizing cultural differences in the workplace. Kolovou explored status, equality, decision-making risks, time perception, and individual vs. team orientation. In any business setting, employees bring their diverse cultural backgrounds, which can pose challenges when aligning with a company’s mission and core values. Yet, these differences also provide opportunities to broaden business perspectives and create a more inclusive, comfortable work environment for everyone.
The second section focused on applying cross-cultural intelligence. It highlighted how pitching ideas, communication styles, and even icebreakers differ across cultures. Case studies included:
- A Brazilian presentation in the UK.
- Negotiations between Chinese and Dutch businesses.
- Bridging differences between Nigeria and India.
These examples effectively illustrated how diverse cultures can collaborate productively.
Armed with a significantly enhanced understanding of cultural dynamics in the workplace, I am eager to apply these insights in my future international work. This course has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to navigate diverse cultural contexts, and I am excited to see how it will positively impact my career.
