Working with Difficult People
This Linkedin Learning was on working with difficult people, taught by Emily Anhalt.
We started by defining and understanding difficult behavior; Including the levels of difficult behavior, and analyzing difficult behavior even in yourself.
There are also a variety of types of difficult behavior. Anhalt covered absent, negative, passive-aggressive, narcissistic, and aggressive behavior. Each of these types has a specific methodology for responding to it, to ensure you deescalate the situation instead of making it worse. Bad habits and mental health struggles could also be considered difficult behavior, even if these aren’t intentional or hard to surmount.
Anhalt also covered difficult bosses, specifically. Since these people are in a position above you, it requires a different response strategy. Other strategies like using flowcharts to determine an appropriate response were covered, which can help you make a rational response decision in a situation where you’re emotionally involved.
Overall, this Linkedin Learning helped me better understand difficult behavior, the mechanisms involved, and how to respond to difficult coworkers/bosses without making the situation worse. Working with difficult people is a part of life, so having these response strategies will certainly help me facilitate collaboration across diverse groups of people.
