Risk Management Intern
During my internship at reThought, a seven-year-old insurtech startup specializing in flood insurance, I worked in the underwriting division of the North America team. My role involved assisting underwriters with broker submissions and analyzing location risk profiles, considering factors such as first-floor elevation, construction material, basement presence, flood resilience score, and storm surge. A key project I focused on throughout the summer was assisting the Chief Underwriting Officer in transitioning our flood product from a non-admitted surplus product to admitted status, which required extensive meetings with regulators from different states, policy form editing, and large-scale data analysis. This internship provided me with hands-on experience in critical industry processes and allowed me to apply knowledge from my risk management and actuarial science courses, particularly in understanding flood risks and insurance product development. The company’s supportive culture and mission to close the flood insurance protection gap made this a truly meaningful and impactful experience.
