Summer Internship 2013

aia-logo This summer I was very lucky to have the opportunity work at Anderson Insurance Agency in Manahawkin, NJ.  Manahawkin is the first town inland from Long Beach Island which was severely devastated by
Super Storm Sandy in October 2012.  Though I started work in May, nearly eight months after the storm, there was still plenty of work to be done.  I was initially brought on to focus on flood insurance but ended up getting exposed to so many different types of coverages, claims and gained valuable industry insight.

One of the huge jobs I worked on throughout the summer was maintaing the claims within the agency system.  I did this by closing claims, processing new claims and contacting carriers forbp9 status updates on dated claims.  The claims varied from flood damage, property damage, wind damage and more. Long Beach Island and Anderson Insurance Agency are still dealing with the devastation a year later.

Having the opportunity to focus on flood insurance for a large part of the summer was a great experience.  I learned so much by working with the supervisors and customer service representatives in addition to the time I spent on my own researching and reading the National Flood Insurance Program.  I love that a unique and interesting niche in such a large industry fell into my lap this summer.  I plan to take the tests for the Associate National Flood Insurance (ANFI) designation and be certified by this spring.

I did not realize how valuable the knowledge I was gaining at Anderson was until I began taking my Risk Management & Insurance classes during the end of the summer and this fall.  It is evident that by being proactive in my career development I have an advantage in the classroom to my peers.
