LGLS 1901: Honors Legal Environment of Business

This course introduced me to the essential aspects of law with an emphasis on the legal environment of business. I learned the basics of contract, tort, property, and administrative law as well as international law. The law involving business includes a discussion of the types of legal entities, as well as employer and employee relations. While this class is required for all students at the Fox School of Business, I greatly enjoyed this introductory class and I am exploring a minor in Legal Studies.

MIS 2901: Information Systems in Organizations

The goal of MIS 2901 is to explain the role of information technology as a business enabler and identify and explain management information systems applications including customer relationship management systems, enterprise systems, e-commerce applications, transaction processing systems, business analytics, and emerging technologies. By the end of the semester, I will be able to evaluate the organizational fit and suitability of business applications and interpret the interaction between information technology, customers, processes, data, infrastructure, participants, and environment in an organization. My wonderful professor helped me to understand the ethical challenges of information technology and explain the evolving role of management information systems in the organization, and the role and careers of MIS professionals. It was this class that led me to declare a double major in Accounting and MIS.

Selected 2020-2021 Academic Year Courses

ACCT 2521: Cost Accounting

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of financial accounting and managerial accounting. Financial accounting information is produced, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). It reports the results of operations to external users (suppliers, customers, investors, regulatory agencies, etc.). Managerial accounting information is produced, in response to specific management needs. It does not follow GAAP. Managerial accounting reports the results of operations of an entity consistent with the needs of internal users (managers, supervisors, etc.). Because of this class, I took great interest in internal and managerial accounting. I will be pursuing dual certification with both the CPA and CMA exams.

ACCT 3511: Intermediate Accounting I

Accounting principles as they relate to financial reporting. Income determination, asset and liability valuation, and the form and content of financial statements are examined. I greatly enjoyed this class and I will be a teaching assistant for one section starting in Fall 2021.

ACCT 3512: Intermediate Accounting II

A continuation of material begun in Accounting 3511. Stockholders’ equity, earnings per share, and long-term investments will be covered along with complex revenue-recognition problems, pensions, leases, inter-period tax allocation, and cash flows. This class was very impactful on me and in addition to a section of ACCT 3511, I will also be a teaching assistant for a section of ACCT 3512.

ACCT 3526: Accounting Information Systems

An introduction to the evaluation and design of accounting information systems and the documentation and analysis of a client’s hardware and software needs. Internal controls, networking options and security issues also are examined. This class utilized Microsoft Axcess as its primary hands on software.

MIS 2402: Web Application Development

This class focuses on creating web-based applications that carry out a business process and integrate web-based services. I learned loops, arrays, conditional statements, data validation, responsive web design, and making API calls using JavaScript.

From cuff-links to handcuffs, business executives face potentially harsh prison sentences for conducting business that violates federal and state laws. This course investigates white-collar crimes, their perpetrators, their punishment, and their impact upon business sectors and the larger community. White-collar crime refers to financially motivated nonviolent crime committed by business and government professionals. This course explores a vast array of these types of criminal offenses while examining government and judicial regulations of financial institutions, commercial entities, and their agents and employees in relation to economic and business crimes. The course will also address constitutional issues pertaining to investigations conducted by governmental and corporate entities.
