Intro to critical making and 3d scanning

On November 18th 2025 in the fall semester, I attended the Intro to critical making workshop at the Scholars Studio in Charles Library. Tyler graduate students presented a thought provoking presentation on what critical making is, what 3d scanning is, and what you can produce from 3d scanning. We learned about the importance of 3d scanning and how it can help people trying to replicate images, physically, especially the online UNESCO museum for stolen cultural items, which took thousands of images of cultural artifacts that other countries have stolen and replicated them so everyone is able to view them. I learned about how 3d printing and modeling can help enable accessibility, by digitizing an original object and being able to present it in virtual form. This activity took place in the Scholars Studio and we learned more about what the studio offers for students and all of the different functionalities that are available for students to use. This activity relates to the importance of accessibility for all, which is something critical making offers through the idea of replicating, but not overriding the original work.
