Work Experience/Internships

Work Experience

The first job I had was in high school, working at Christ’s Home Retirement Company located in Warminster, PA. There my job position was known as a dietary aide. I worked the dinner shift and my job varied day to day. A typical day as a dietary aide would start as cleaning and preparation for the food being served that night. I handled duties of making food, cutting food, and serving meal to the senior citizens. I liked my job at Christ’s Home because I work well with elderly people. I formed relationships with the members of the retirement home and learned about many of their lives. I would not consider this job to be hard work. It was easy and fun to interact with many fellow employees and senior citizens. I worked for exactly a year at this company; from July 2011 to July 2012. I learned how to act in the work place and to behave in a professional manner.

Another job I have had was tree service. I worked for Vicker’s Tree Service Inc. in Langhorne, PA. I only worked for the summer because this was my summer job when I am away from school. My position as a groundskeeper held many daily responsibilities. I was to attend to all the equipment and trucks to ensure they were prepared for the day’s work. I split wood and made fire wood, which would sell. Worked the chipper at times and helped my team break down trees, branches, and stumps into wood chips. I had the responsibility of driving trucks and would carry significantly heavy loads. The coolest memory of working tree service was cutting down a tree in Bill Cosby’s PA property. We had worked on Cosby’s tree that was struck down by lightning for days. Teamwork was important for a job like this because it is very dangerous work. Communication ensured the job was running smoothly.

 Internship

When I was 16 years old, I did a summer internship at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. I was an engineer’s assistant at the Carderock division. There I experienced an actual workplace for the first time in my life. I helped two engineer’s with the operational activities. I did not have a massive workload at that age, however used the company’s information systems to help complete virtual blue prints that were to be used on the ships. I gained a lot of experience with my team at the Navy Yard but was not as interested in engineering as I expected. Nevertheless, I did not major in engineering but now enjoy the MIS world.
