Artificial Intelligence – Extra Credit MIS2502

For the extra credit assignment, I’ve decided to research and write about the use of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is the ability of computer systems to perform operations and tasks that were originally only able to be performed by humans. This is important because it could be the future of business and operations as we know them. It not only makes things easier for companies but also more effective as well. There are worries about artificial intelligence as well as the benefits. Many are worried that it could take jobs in factories and store fronts as well.

This connects to MIS2502 because most if not all of artificial intelligence is full of data and it relies on it in order to run. IBM’s Watson runs on mass amounts of code and data and can handle big data in order to answer questions and provide answers, even calculations. We talked a lot in class about inputting data and getting information out from that data as well. For example, IBM must input code and basic data in order for Watson to run and they can get data out as a result of this. Another way it connects is that many companies use data analytics to predict and judge how well their businesses are doing. In class we used dimensional data modeling to get outputs from the analytical data store. Many companies get this data from artificial intelligence such as RFID chips and scanners that track products and inventory.

One example of artificial intelligence is Siri, something that many of us use every day. We use it to set alarms, set reminders, and to text people hands free. Siri collects information from what you say and the data it has on your phone to provide answers and complete tasks. As time goes on Siri becomes more and more intelligent as it gets used to your preferences through its analyzation of your data and inputs.
