DevOps / Cloud Technologies Intern

During the summer of 2024, I interned at B. Braun Medical Inc., a global leader in medical technologies with over 60,000 employees worldwide. B. Braun’s products are widely used in hospitals globally. I was part of the Information Technology department as a DevOps & Cloud Technologies Intern under a Solutions Architect at B. Braun USA, based in Bethlehem, PA.

In this role, I was primarily involved in automation projects. I spent a lot of my time observing and learning under my manager, a cloud solutions architect. My largest project was developing a Python script to automate the import of asset information from Excel sheets into the company’s new IT asset database. This tool was instrumental in importing over 10,000 assets, streamlining the transition to the new system. I also developed a PowerShell script to manage server backups, which involved cleaning up outdated backups and storing critical ones on a dedicated storage server. Additionally, I gained exposure to cloud technologies by analyzing Azure spending using its cost management tools. I prepared a report with cost-saving recommendations, which I presented to my manager, and was given a sandbox environment to explore various Azure functionalities.

This internship provided valuable insights into the operations of Information Technology within a large corporate environment, showcasing how different departments collaborate to meet the diverse needs of the organization. It also significantly enhanced my scripting skills through the application of Python and PowerShell in automating daily tasks. Furthermore, I gained foundational knowledge of Azure. My academic background was highly relevant, particularly the “Scripting for Data Analytics/Science with Python” course, which equipped me with essential Python skills that were crucial for the projects I undertook. Moreover, although my “Cloud Architecture” course focused on Amazon Web Services, many of the principles I learned were transferable to Azure, facilitating a smooth transition to the platform and allowed me to expand my knowledge quickly.
