Completed Courses in MIS:

Enterprise IT architecture – Learned about and created an application using node.js and AWS cloud services. Understanding how to create and launch applications using the cloud is important as companies start to transfer most of their resources to cloud services. Understanding how to do so can help a company to utilize the cloud efficiently to save costs and the possibility of downtime which can hurt a company’s profits.

Digital Solutions Studio – Learned best used techniques for creating websites tailored to the user and the creator. In this class I used wordpress to create an updated version of a site using concepts dicussed in class for user oriented design. Being able to create a user friendly product or service is important to companies who want to attract and retain customers. Using concepts learned in this class I can apply concepts to create improvements in products or services to do just that.

Data Analytics- Analyzed and came to meaningful conclusions from business data. Learned to analyze, model, and design databases. Created data models and data warehouses. Learned how to operate and manage a database system and SQL. Used Data mining techniques with R to come to better decisions a business can make. Created a detailed data analyzation presentation using techniques to source, cleanse, organize and analyze data sets.

Data analytics are a huge part of business in today’s economy. The ability to gather data and make it into information has become a valuable asset for companies in order to make and sustain a profit. MySql is a popular tool used by companies in order to create, maintain and query databases. R is also one of the most popular languages used to analyze data and come to meaningful conclusions. Having the ability to use and understand R and MySql is important in today’s data driven economy.

Data-Centric Application Development- Learnt front-end developing techniques using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and J-Query. Learned how to create forms using HTML-5 form controls. Learned debugging techniques using developer tools. Learned how to animate a webpage using J-query and CSS. Created static webpages as well as how to create an API. Created and developed an API from scratch.

Learning these skills is important to companies so that it is possible to understand applications and how different codes work in relation to each other to have an application function as the company would like. After taking this class I am able to evaluate application and provide insight as to how an application should be structured and how to fix an application if it is not functioning properly.

Information Systems in Organizations- Created Swim Lane and ER diagrams. Introduced the concepts of the supply chain, and customer relationship management as well as enterprise systems and artificial intelligence.

This class taught me many of the basic concepts surrounding information systems in the today’s economy. By being able to create a swim lane diagram I am able to showa logical representation of how a business function’s information systems must be set up to create an efficient way to conduct this function in order for it to be profitable for the company. By creating ER diagrams I am able to create a representation of how a database should be structured in order to gather the most important data needed for a business function.

Completed Courses in Accounting:

Intermediate Accounting II – Learned the details about the accounting approach towards current and non-current liabilities, stockholders’ equity, earnings per share, long-term investments, pensions, leases, taxes, and cash flows. Being able to understand the in-depth nature of the liabilities and the stockholders’ equity sections of the balance sheet can help to keep a company from offering fradulent financial statements while puttign their best foot forward to attract investors. Being able to reconcile the balance sheet and income statements to a statement of cash flows can help to analyze a company’s profitability over short and long term periods. This can help a company to find ways to increase their cash flows and profitability.

Accounting Information Systems – Used Microsoft Access, Excel and tableau to analyze information and to make decisions. Also reinforced basic concepts surrounding the implementing and production of information systems and databases. Understanding information systems as they relate to accounting is important to make decisions whether it be for budgeting, or for finding the success or failure of specific products. Being able to use information systems for accounting purposes can help a company to make quality financial decisions regarding the company.

Cost Accounting- The accumulation and analysis of cost accounting information for the valuation of products and services, internal decision making, and measurement of financial performance.

This class taught me many of the practices used by managers to make decisions based on cost. This is important to companies because in order to create and maintain a profit, decisions need to be made as to how to financially structure a business and it’s processes based on it’s budget. Staying within budget is critical to a company’s success and this class helps to determine what are the best decisions to be made based off of cost.

Intermediate Accounting I- Learned accounting principles as they relate to financial reporting. Solved problems regarding income determination, asset valuation along with complex revenue-recognition problems, and cash flows.

This class is useful so that one can understand the core principles of accounting, and many of the asset line items on a balance sheet. Understanding the core concepts of accounting is crucial in order to uphold accounting standards so that the balance sheet is not fraudulent. Yet, companies want the best balance sheet possible to lure in investors, so the knowledge of how to build a true but valuable line item amount in the balance sheet is important.

Financial Accounting – Learned how to make journal entries and assess a company’s financial records.

This class is useful for companies so that their employees can understand basic accounting concepts and how business transactions relate to the balance sheet. Understanding assets and liabilities is important so that when a company owner or employee can understand what the worth of the company is, how much of the company’s worth can be attributed to owners of the company and how much is owed to people who are not owners.

Business Breadth Courses Completed:

Fundamentals of International Business – Learned about many of the aspects surrounding international business and multinational corporations. Discussed how strategy and the structure of corporations looking to expand to other countries have to take in a number of variables in order to be successful. Understanding how to align a company in another country is important so that they can reach their goals and expand their business. Understanding other cultures and the countries they’re in can help a company to make decisions about where it is best to expand their business.

Risk Management – Learned about the types of risk, the process of identifying and acting upon risk, including using insurance, risk retention, self-insurance, and loss control. Learned about risk and the public and how insurance relates to the public. Also learned about employee benefits, what certain benefits entail and how to make decisions based on benefits offered. Taking this class will help me to identify risks and how to act upon them, specifically when it comes to a company’s IT architecture. Being able to make educated decisions based on the risks presented to a company can help a company to avoid a bad public image and to keep a profit.

Financial Management – Learned the basic principles of Financial Management. These principles included the factors of determining stock prices, the time value of money, determining prices and yields of stocks and bonds, the concept and nature of risk, the estimation of project cash flows and the use of Net present value and Internal Rate of Return in the capital budgeting process.

This class is useful to companies because their employees can compute and make decisions for investments the company wants to make, or decisions based on obligations the company wants to meet.

Operations Management – Learned the best practices for running an efficient business, mostly through the use of excel.

This is useful to an employee because they can make decisions for a company based off of cost and expected profit. Knowing how to use excel to make these decision is important because it can save a company time, money and reduces the chances of an error being made. This in turn can help companies to save money.

Business Communications- Learned common business communications skills such as clearly and effectively editing my own writing, formulating reasonable oral arguments, presentation skills, and critical thinking and analytical skills.

This is useful for a company so that their employees can communicate efficiently and so that they learn business ettiquette. Communicating efficiently is important so that those who are working in a sector can understand exactly what the goals are of the company. Communication is important in closing business deals as well and understanding how to give a knowedgable presentation can help a company to close deals.

Business Society & Ethics- Learned ethical standards and principles in order to provide a positive impact on the business world today.

Understanding how to be an ethical employee is important in today’s economy. Attaining your goals for a triple bottom line is important so that a company can be a valuable part of society. When you employees understand that the decisions they make should be good for all stakeholders they can earn the company a good standing in society which will keep the company profitable.

Marketing Management- Learned the components of marketing strategy. Learned basic elements of the marketing-mix including, product development and management; pricing; distribution, logistics and supply-chain management; integrated marketing communications and promotion. Then applied all of my knowledge towards a new shoes simulation game that required my team to run a new shoes company against other teams in the class.

Understanding your market is important so that companies can earn and retain a profit. If you are not selling your products or services, then your company will ultimately go bankrupt. By knowing who you want to sell to, in the right place, at the right price, and through the correct channels a company can make a profit. However if one of these parts of the marketing mix are not correct the company’s product or service may not be successful.

Microeconomics- Learned about the effect of price on demand, the effects that externalities and taxes have on society, and the four different classifications for competitions in the market: perfect competition, monopolistic competition, monopoly and oligopoly.

Understanding your competitors and your company in the economy is important to set goals for your company. Understanding what state the economy is in and the supply and demand for products and services helps the company to make a realistic plan for attaining their company goals. Understanding your competitor’s place in the market as well as your own also helps to derive a realistic plan as to how you should approach to share a market, or if you should enter a market at all.

BA 2101 Professional Development- Learned how to develop a resume as well as prepare myself for applying for jobs and internships.

Understanding how to apply fro jobs and internships is important for selling that you are the best person for a job. If you do not know how to sell yourself, then you won’t be able to get that job. This may hurt a company if you were indeed the best candidate for a job, it can also hurt yourself from attaining the best job for yourself.

Legal Studies- Learned of many of the laws put in place for businesses as well as the remedies set out for companies, or consumers, if these laws are broken.

Understanding the laws attaining to business are important to avoid legal liabilities in the future. Knowing what you can and can’t do in a legal sense can help a company avoid paying out large sums of money or can help the company to enforce a contract that needs to be upheld.

Statistics 2103- Learned how to find the probability of an event as well as analyze the results of simple random samples. Also practiced to organize and collect data for these types of problems in Excel. Understanding statistics can help a company to make better decisions. Being able to use math can help a company to make decisions based on risk.

Macroeconomics- Learned many of the fundamental rules surrounding economics and applied these rules to analyze different economies across the globe.

Understanding macro-economics is important so that you can apply your knowledge of economies to help your company. for example, by knowing that many first-world companies are service oriented economies, you would decide not to produce a manufacturing plant in one of these countries.

HRM: Leadership and Organization- Learned of the qualities of good and bad leadership at multiple companies; and how to organize a company.

Treating employees valuably is an asset to any company. Understanding how to treat your employees correctly leads to improved labor. A good company culture is driven by a great understanding of leadership and relations in the workplace.

Statistics 1102- Reviewed many ways of analyzing data. Learned how to use Excel. Using Excel to compute meaningful statistics is useful to make decisions for a company.

Other Completed Courses:

Greek & Roman Culture- Learned the multi-ethnic dimensions of the Roman world particularly during the Imperialistic period. I recognized ways in which race intersected with other groups identifications in the Roman world. I also improved my analytical writing skills as well as my informational literacy. Improving on my analytical skills and informational literacy will help me to read and attain information better to become a more efficient worker. Being educated on other cultures is also important to relations in international business.

Mosaics II-  Read and analyzed many pieces of literature mainly focusing on the concept of issues in society, and human rights and reason. Notable pieces of literature include: A Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Hillbilly Elegy, The Vindication of the Rights of Women, Siderius Nuncius, and Civilization and It’s Discontents. Reading these pieces of literature helps to put other people’s perspectives into place. Understanding those around you and their goals is a crucial part of keeping healthy relationships. Having a good company culture is an asset for any company.

Mosaics I : The Good Life- Read and analyzed many classic pieces of literature including: Socrates’ Apology, The Bible and The Iliad. Reading these pieces of literature helps to put other people’s perspectives into place. Understanding those around you and their goals is a crucial part of keeping healthy relationships. Having a good company culture is an asset for any company.

Interpersonal Communication- Learned many soft skills in communicating, emotional intelligence and ways to handle conflict.

Learning good communication skills are important to reading, analyzing and acting upon a situation. Learning the ways certain actions affect individuals helps to learn more about the characteristics of your co-workers. Understanding how to deal with your coworkers is important to keeping a good company culture.
