NoSQL Databases

NoSQL databases, also known as Not Only SQL, are the latest and greatest way to handle copious amounts of data in technology.  They are a far cry from the established relational database management system. There is actually no need to create a relational schema. Instead of having a consistent data model for accessibility, NoSQL opts for a more broad approach that can handle large portions of information while keeping high performance. They are designed with web applications in mind, and scale out to multiple hosts better than relational databases (Vaughn).

NoSQL databases relate quite a bit to what is covered in MIS 2502. SQL and relational databases are a vital part of the core class, and NoSQL is the next step in the database process. The Data Analytics class focuses on smaller-scale data with mapped out purposes. NoSQL is different in that it is more specialized towards extreme amounts of different data. Using it for assignments in the class would be useless, because 2502 focuses on a more rigid form of data rather than the massive non-relational scheme used by large corporations.

NoSQL is a somewhat new concept. Normal databases have been used since the 60’s, but these new forms of records are still in the infancy stage. A few bigger websites have put them into action such as: Google, LinkedIn, and Facebook. Facebook has specifically used an email search system with their NoSQL database. This contained a staggering 100 million mailboxes with over 60TB of data (Shah).  A normal relational system would spawn problems with the length of time to search. NoSQL greatly shortens the time to find what you are looking for.
