Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) defined by Britannica is the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.  AI Systems are created to think like humans.  Some systems have the ability to reason, discover meaning, or learn from experiences that it goes through.  Over the years it has evolved from the concepts of Neural Networks, to Machine Learning, to Deep Learning.  Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence. The SAS website describes that Machine Learning uses systems that learn from data, identify patterns and make decisions without needing people to constantly watch.  It uses Neural Networks (structured like neurons) to hold and structure the new information that is presented to the system so technologies can perform human like processes.  Deep Learning is a type of machine learning that essentially trains the system to LEARN from past experiences and patterns instead of the system having predefined functions.  AI has becoming increasingly important because it has many different functions and is being utilized in more industries every year. From robotics to google search engines and voice recognition, AI technologies are proving to be very beneficial.  These concepts apply, and build on material that we covered in the course MIS 2502, specifically what we can do with data, how we use data, what we get out of our data and rooting through databases.  In Data Analytics there is a need for technologies that can root through and analyze large sets of data quickly.  AI is great at this kind of sorting and connection-making through datasets and can do it many times faster than a lot of humans and programs that have been used in the past.  AI has allowed people to get a better understanding of what we can get out of our data because it can process so much in a short time thus, giving us more accurate data as well as greater connections between different sources.  A good example of this kind of process and how AI is helping improve it is how artificial intelligence is being used to help discover new materials.  According to an article by Angela Chan on The Verge, Scientists are using AI analytical systems to analyze thousands of compounds so that algorithms can predict which ones combine to form interesting new materials.  Also, she states that other scientists are using the analytical AI technologies to mine published papers for “recipes” to make the new materials.  Furthermore, scientists can pull very detailed characteristics from the analytics and in the case of this article can find out what exactly makes materials stronger, lighter, etc.  This data allows scientists to look at qualities of materials that have never been studied before they had this data.
