Systems Engineering Intern

  1. As a Systems Engineering intern at the FCC I worked on a variety of different things to help accomplish the end goal of developing system requirements for the FCC to give to the third party developers that would create the newly integrated system. This started with understanding the systems and the Inputs/Outputs that each system deals with, then understanding FCC policy in conjunction with what the system would require/be allowed to do. I worked on one overarching project over the course of my 3 months there.
  2. Develop System Requirements for the integration of 4 separate FCC systems:
    1. Read through user manuals and understand FCC policy for different measurements utilized in the telecom industry
    2. Create Data Dictionaries on Microsoft excel for each individual system highlighting how this system will potentially look with data it is receiving/storing
    3. Clean through data dictionaries created in excel (some being up to 200 rows of data each) and look for discrepancies / bottlenecks that were creating inabilities to analyze data properly
    4. Make changes to data dictionaries to get rid of non-useful data
    5. Develop 20 pages of system requirements showing how 3rd party developers should create new cloud-based system that encompasses 4 currently seperate 911 systems
  3. During this internship, I learned a lot of different things and was able to draw on lots of different things I have learned during my time in the MIS department. I was able to draw upon my knowledge from 2502 of the RDB and how that is the underlying principle of system engineering. I also was able to develop some knowledge about UX before taking it this semester when creating my requirements and also was utilizing info from cloud architecture I ended up learning this semester so I had to do a lot of learning on the job. I loved the research I had to do for this internship and found it very beneficial for my own personal growth and education.
