I have been very fortunate to find myself in a department with a Chair and fellow faculty members who support taking risks in the classroom.\u00a0 Traditional, lecture and textbook based education just isn\u2019t going to take our students to the level they need to be if they are going to be competitive and the people on my team truly \u201cget it\u201d.\u00a0 I frequently try new things in the classroom.\u00a0 Some of my\u00a0ideas are bad\u2026some very bad!\u00a0 However, I\u2019ve always received wonderful support and coaching from my Chair and we are all very fortunate to have an environment where we can take chances, make mistakes, learn from them, and try to take teaching to the next level.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-74\" src=\"http:\/\/community.mis.temple.edu\/mdoyle\/files\/2011\/10\/learning-to-ride-a-bike1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/community.mis.temple.edu\/mdoyle\/files\/2011\/10\/learning-to-ride-a-bike1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/community.mis.temple.edu\/mdoyle\/files\/2011\/10\/learning-to-ride-a-bike1.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Teaching is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.\u00a0 It feels kind of like when I was teaching my kids how to ride a bike.\u00a0 After countless hours of falls, minor cuts and bruises, and even a few tears, you\u2019re holding the seat\u2026holding them steady\u2026 running behind them\u2026then you let go!\u00a0 They wobble a bit, catch their balance, wobble a little more, and off they go.\u00a0 They get to the end of the block, make the turn, and as they pedal out of sight all you can do is cross your fingers and smile.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-76\" src=\"http:\/\/community.mis.temple.edu\/mdoyle\/files\/2011\/10\/Ride-Bike.bmp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I enjoy going to graduation.\u00a0 While I don\u2019t enjoy listening while they call out 1,000 names, when I see one of our MIS majors walk across the stage I smile\u2026very much like I smiled when my kids learned to ride a bike.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s great to see alumni when they visit us for thing like the IT Awards Reception.\u00a0 Keeping with the bike analogy, it\u2019s like when you kid comes back around the corner and you see them again.\u00a0 While they still may wobble a bit, you know they\u2019ve figured this out.\u00a0 Even though they may still fall from time to time, you are confident that they can do this and they don\u2019t need your help anymore.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-77\" src=\"http:\/\/community.mis.temple.edu\/mdoyle\/files\/2011\/10\/imagesCAEFAREN1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"188\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most of my Temple family knows me as a teacher.\u00a0 Teaching is my second career and my second great professional adventure.
